Suited connector
Two cards of the same suit with consecutive or near-consecutive ranks, such as 9s-8s, valued for their combined straight and flush potential rather than their showdown strength as a pair of high cards.
A suited connector rarely wins by pairing either card outright. Its value comes from the wide range of flops it can flop a strong draw on, and from how well it can be played to win a big pot when it connects, since both hole cards work together rather than needing one card to pair alone. That makes it a speculative hand: cheap to fold when it misses, capable of a big result when it hits, and far more playable from late position, where there is room to see a cheap flop and get away clean when it does not connect.
