Why a heuristic, not just chip conversion?

The Bounty Chip Value calculator above converts a cash bounty into chips at the tournament’s current exchange rate: bounty dollars against the remaining prize pool, scaled by the total chips still in play. That figure is exact for the moment it is calculated, but it needs three live tournament numbers — the remaining prize pool and the total chips in play — that are not always to hand when you are sizing up a decision quickly, or when you are studying hand histories or building a strategy away from the table.

Bounty factor answers a related but simpler question: given only the bounty’s size relative to where it started, and the tournament’s starting stack, roughly how many chips is it worth? It is built from a widely repeated PKO heuristic rather than a live conversion: an average bounty is worth, very roughly, a third of a starting stack in the early levels of a knockout tournament, and it scales up in proportion as the bounty itself compounds from repeated knockouts.

Where the 1/3 constant comes from

PKO structures typically split each entry fee so a meaningful slice — commonly around a third of it — funds the bounty pool rather than the ordinary prize pool. Averaged across the whole field, that split means the average bounty is worth in the region of a third of a starting stack once you express it in chips rather than dollars. It is a population-level average, not a promise about any single hand: a bounty on a specific opponent might be worth more or less once you weigh in your actual fold equity, their stack, and how the hand plays out, which is exactly what the bounty chip value and equity drop calculators are for.

What makes the heuristic useful despite being approximate is that it needs almost no live information: just the bounty’s current size, its starting size, and the tournament’s starting stack, all of which are printed on the structure sheet or easy to recall. That makes it a fast mental checkpoint at the table, and a convenient constant for building charts or studying spots away from a live game, where the remaining prize pool and total chips in play are not always known.

How this is calculated

bounty_factor = (bounty / starting_bounty) × (starting_stack / 3.0). The 1/3 constant is the documented PKO heuristic that an average bounty is worth roughly a third of a starting stack early on; it drifts as the tournament progresses, since bounty pools and chip pools do not grow at exactly the same rate as players bust.

Known omissions: this figure ignores own-head half-bounty splits and any ICM interaction with the payout structure — the same two omissions as the bounty chip value calculator, plus the fact that the 1/3 constant itself is a fixed average rather than a per-spot recalculation.

  1. Example 1

    Early game: the standard 1/3-of-a-stack heuristic

    A $25 starting bounty on a 10,000-chip starting stack, still unchanged at $25: bounty factor is (25 / 25) × (10,000 / 3) ≈ 3,333 chips, right at the widely quoted rule of thumb that an average bounty is worth roughly a third of a starting stack early in a PKO.

  2. Example 2

    Mid-game: a red-chip bounty grown to 126% of its starting size

    The same $25 starting bounty has grown to $31.50 after a few knockouts, stacks are still measured against the same 10,000-chip starting stack: bounty factor is (31.5 / 25) × (10,000 / 3) ≈ 4,200 chips, about 42% of a starting stack — a bounty that has visibly compounded is worth chasing more aggressively than the flat heuristic alone would suggest.
