A progressive knockout (PKO) tournament splits part of every entry fee into a cash bounty on each player’s head, on top of the ordinary prize pool. Bust an opponent and you collect their bounty immediately, in cash, alongside whatever chips you already win from the pot. That structure changes the maths of almost every marginal decision: a call that loses chip equity in the pot can still be profitable overall if it also buys a real chance at collecting a bounty, and a big stack facing a short one with a fat bounty attached is often incentivised to play looser than a standard freezeout would ever recommend.
The trouble is that a bounty and a stack are denominated in different currencies: the bounty is a fixed dollar amount, decided when the tournament was designed, while your stack and the pot are chips, whose real-money value drifts constantly as the field busts out and the remaining prize pool changes shape. You cannot directly compare “$25” against “12,000 chips” without first putting them on the same footing. Bounty chip value is exactly that conversion: it restates a cash bounty in the chip units you are already thinking in at the table, so it can sit directly alongside your stack size, the pot, and your opponent’s stack in the same decision.
How the conversion works
The idea is proportional scarcity. Early in a tournament, chips are relatively plentiful and the prize pool is large, so a fixed dollar bounty converts to relatively few chips. As the field thins out, the total chips in play stay roughly constant (chips simply move between surviving players) while the remaining prize pool shrinks — every player who busts takes their share of the money with them. The same $25 bounty therefore converts to more and more chips as the tournament progresses, which is exactly the intuitive effect PKO players describe: bounties “get bigger” in chip terms as the game goes on, even though the dollar figure printed on the tournament structure sheet never changes.
Practically, that conversion means comparing a bounty against your own stack, an opponent’s stack, or the size of a pot becomes a single like-for-like number instead of a dollars-versus-chips guess. It is the same discipline pot odds and ICM equity already apply elsewhere: convert everything into one unit before you compare it, rather than eyeballing two different scales side by side.
How this is calculated
bounty_chip_value = bounty × chips_in_play / remaining_prize_pool.
Known omissions: this figure ignores own-head half-bounty splits (some PKO structures pay half the bounty to the player who busts you, and only refund the other half to the pool), the future capture value of a bounty you have not yet won but might still add to your own stack, and any ICM interaction with the surrounding payout structure. It is a chip-value conversion, not a full equity model.
Worked bounty chip value examples
Example 1
A late-stage stack with a small remaining pool
A $25 bounty, 240,000 chips still in play, and only $25 left in the prize pool: bounty chip value is 25 × 240,000 / 25 = 240,000 chips. When the remaining pool shrinks to exactly the bounty on offer, the whole tournament’s remaining chip supply is worth no more, in cash terms, than that single knockout — the last bounty left standing.
Example 2
A mid-tournament bounty on an average stack
A $25 bounty, 100,000 chips in play, and a $500 remaining pool: bounty chip value is 25 × 100,000 / 500 = 5,000 chips. If your own stack is 20,000 chips, that bounty is worth a quarter of your stack in chip terms — a meaningful incentive to make a looser call than the raw pot odds alone would justify.
